Over the last three decades the frequency of droughts and floods in East Africa have increased (for example, the 2016 - 2017 drought experienced in Kenya), resulting in crop failures and loss of livestock (EAC, 2017).

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (the first major international weather agency to report on conditions in 2017) reported that 2017 temperatures averaged 14.7 degrees Celsius at the Earth’s surface, which is 1.2degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times.
